Big news today, people…
I’ve been cleared to RUN again!
Short distances, very slowly, but still…a huge victory for me today!
My physical therapist did some tests, observed my form, had me do lots of silly movements, gave me some tips, and now I can proudly say she believes I should move forward in my training. I am beyond thrilled that my injury isn’t worse than it is.
SO, here goes! You all know I ran five glorious minutes yesterday. Yes that says “minutes”, not miles.
Today, I did some back and forth jogging at my PT appointment, as well as a couple intervals of walking/jogging on the treadmill. That only lasted about ten minutes; I was a little sore from a sports massage and didn’t want to push it.
Apparently, I have feet that a “shoe manufacturer dreams of” because they are a very typical width and neutral arch. I’m overly normal. Or something. I do get blisters on my toes often, which leads me to believe that I need a shoe with a slightly bigger toe box. My lovely physical therapist also gave me a list of shoes she thinks would fit me well:
- Mizuno Precision
- Nike Pegasus
- Brooks Flow, or Ghost
- Asics Cumulus
I’m pretty sure I tried the Asics Cumulus shoes on once but they didn’t work for me. I’m intrigued by the others though.
Has anyone tried any of these shoes? What’s a good shoe with a wider toe box? I’m sick of blisters!
My first running shoes were Nike Pegasus, and I really liked them.
Now I use Brooks Ghost, and I love them. I think you should go to a store where they analyze your runnining and help you find the right shoe. Finding the right ones are not easy and I am sure I couldnt have done it myself. Good luck!
Hi Nina! Thanks for the comment! My physical therapist suggested those shoes based on her “measurements” of my feet/watching me run but I do definitely want to go to a running store and check out all of their recommendations as well. I’ve been really wanting to test some Brooks shoes out. Thankfully the store I go to will let you return the shoes if you don’t love the fit after a few weeks
That’s perfect. I found a very good store in my area that let you return the shoes too. I hope it all works out with you and that your injury is history soon
The Mizunos are being made with a much wider toe box lately. you may also want to try some thinner socks? Like using sock liners rather than socks.
Congratulations on the 5 mins of running. I remember the first day when I got to run with my Physical Therapist. After my initial fear, I bust out laughing, it was so fun, and then of course all the waterworks started…It’s a great moment.
I can not really speak on any of those other shoes, but your PT must be spot on, because I have this tiny narrow foot, and none of those shoes have really worked well for me in the past. THough I did for about 5 years run in Mizuno shoes, with a lot of loyalty (obviously huh?) I am now a saucony girl.
Hi there! Thanks so much for your input. I have actually been looking for new socks, so let me know if you have a brand that works well! Mine are a little thick so you are probably right, thinner ones would be better.
I was emotional when my PT told me I could start running again too! It’s such a relief. A lot of people don’t understand that huge rush of emotion but I definitely know where you are coming from.
Thanks very much for stopping by
the best socks I have found, are a little pricey but they HOLD up….Balega brand they sell both socks and sock liners. I tend to use the sock liners, but Their hidden comfort is a little padded and I found them to be comfy as well….
Enjoy your running!
I just got those, actually! I’ve worn them a couple times and so far so good. I’ll have to try the liners too. Thanks!
