Sports and Pizza and 7 Miler Weekends

Boston Marathon is tomorrow!!

Obviously I’m not running, but I have a few good friends who are. My friend/roommate from college is going for a sub 3 marathon. SUB 3! Well, she said that with the hot weather she just wants to finish, but I have faith in her. She’s amazing. She’s always been super speedy – she ran XC and track for KU! And, she recently had a baby. Yeahh Melissa!

While unfortunately I’m not in Boston carb-loading right now (alright, I’m still carb-loading…can you still call it that if you aren’t racing the next day?) I’ve had a pretty great, very eventful weekend.

Friday night I went to a little happy hour with some co-workers and got to know the lovely ladies I work with. Post-happy hour, I headed to the Garden with B, my roommate Ben, and his girlfriend Erin (Hi guys!) for some Knicks domination – they won by almost 40 points! I’m not a huge Knicks fan but I’ll cheer for them. It was Ben’s first time at MSG and Erin’s first pro basketball game so we were all very pumped up!

To continue our sports-filled weekend, B and I spent Saturday at the lovely Yankee Stadium.

Beautiful day, lots of drama. Some old guy threw up, another guy thought the "waitress" was "too rude". So much excitement.

My heart was broken when I saw my favorite player playing for a team that is NOT my team for the first time:

Albert, how could you leave my beloved Cardinals?! Oh that's right...millions of dollars. Can't really blame you, buddy. Still love you.

I was cheering for the Yankees but of course I had to cheer for Albert Pujols during his at bats. I couldn’t help myself. B wasn’t amused, nor were the surrounding Yankee fans.

We stayed in the Bronx and had some seriously delish pizza at B’s friend’s restaurant on Riverdale. SO GOOD. We always make a point to visit Addeo’s Pizzeria if we end up anywhere near the Bronx. Or not near the Bronx. (We’re in Brooklyn? Uhhh yeah we should probably go to Addeo’s.)

Go there. Get a slice of “Grandma’s pizza” , which is literally just (unbelievable) dough, the best sauce ever, garlic, and some other spices. Be in pizza heaven.

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy...especially when I also have pizza.

When we got home, we watched Horrible Bosses, which is absolutely hilarious, and some Rangers hockey.

On today’s agenda was 7 miles – which I knocked out this morning! It was beautiful and warm outside and I was pumped to get out there for a decent amount of time. I don’t want to post the splits but I will. I still feel totally inadequate when it comes to pacing and speediness and consistency, but am reminding myself that I’m coming back from injury and, as my good friend Lauren reminded me today, I can’t let myself get a case of the “terrible toos”…”too much, too fast, too soon“….which I have certainly fallen victim to before! I know I could go faster on a 7 miler but I shouldn’t. For now,  I need to remember to be thankful that I CAN run!

Even with this run I was feeling some aches…still the outside right knee thing…and I swear I could feel my piriformis. It almost felt like it was working “too hard”. Does anyone know what I mean? Back to the serious glute strengthening for me!

Ugh. What's wrong with me?? Seriously? What are these splits!?!

Yeah, I couldn’t tell you the reasoning for these crazy splits.

Mile 1 was “supposed” to be a warm up. So why is mile 2 slower?

Mile 3 I stopped to stretch without stopping my watch, so that’s why it’s the slowest by far.

My new amazing running song (which I will discuss in a moment) was on repeat for miles 4 and 5 so I think that’s the reason for the pickup in pace.

For some reason when I got to mile 5, I was thinking I had 1 mile left. WRONG. When I realized my horrible math skills got me again, I think I just gave in a bit and slowed way down for those last two. I guess I negative split though, right?

My last mile was supposed to be a cooldown. As you can see, I am indeed an inadequate pacer.

Back to the BEST RUNNING SONG…well, for now anyway. I overplay every song I love and promptly get sick of it. Don’t be concerned if I hate it next week.

I don’t usually love those techno, crazy, fist-pumping sounding songs, but this little gem, the “Levels Skrillex Remix”, put me at a great pace and made my energy soar. LOVE. I think the artist is Avicii? Not sure. Here it is in iTunes, it’s the one that’s 4:41. You can judge me and say I have a poor taste in music but I don’t care. It made me want to go dominate the world. Or just run faster.

Yes, I am dancing, still listening to my song, happy I finished 7. Still feeling energetic...see?!

Thank you for asking but no, I’m not embarrassed to admit that I was dancing in my room and took a picture of it to share with you. Yes, I know I’m making it really easy for people to blackmail me with awkward photos in the future. Im doing it all for you guys. Enjoy.

So, here I am enjoying my Sunday evening watching Frozen Planet  on the Discovery Channel with the roommates and thanking the good Lord that I’m not living anywhere near Antarctica where it is currently -70 degrees. MINUS SEVENTY.

GOOOO BOSTON RUNNERS!! So pumped for all of you. Anyone going to cheer? Tracking any runners? How was your weekend? Throw out your favorite running songs – I want to hear them!

hahahaha!! thanks! Glad I’m not the only one!!

Yes we do need to remind ourselves how lucky we are occasionally. It’s easy to get caught up in “life” sometimes but it’s important to make time to think about how many opportunities we have :)

Congrats on your run! Don’t worry about the times of it and splits- that doesn’t tell the whole story. It might not be your fastest run ever, but a run is a run and it’s better safe than sorry when you’re coming back from an injury.

I want to try a piece of authentic NYC pizza so bad one day! I’ve never been there but if I go I’m definitely eating pizza!
