Some people hate them. Some people jump out of bed happily looking forward to a fresh week. (Jerks. Just kidding. Sort of.) Other people just think of “Office Space”.
For me? Even though I’m fairly cranky when I wake up, Mondays are my favorite strength training days. After a long run on Saturday, I’m usually pumped up enough (read: not as sore and tired) by Monday to get my lift on. I love saving interval workouts for Monday nights because after running around all weekend and then suddenly
being forced to endure sitting all day at work, I’m always itching to get up and moving again.
You might remember Erin from my Ragnar team:
She now teaches on Monday nights at the studio on the Upper East Side (3rd Ave between 83rd and 84th):
From the Exceed Fitness Website: If you are looking to challenge your cardiovascular endurance while increasing muscle tone and strength, than this is the perfect class for you. Set to fun and motivational music, this class aims to push your limits in a high-intensity kickboxing environment. In addition to burning calories through cardio, the TRX is incorporated to ensure that you are obtaining a total body workout. The TRX workout gives your muscles visible tone while increasing your strength- allowing you to maximize your 50-minute experience. Each week you will push your limits, surpass them, and find new limits. If you want to sweat, have fun, burn calories, and increase your muscle endurance then we will see you in class!
Class Review: This is one of the best/toughest workouts I’ve had in a LONG time. Not only is Erin super motivational and fun, but she definitely puts you to work and gives class-goers an intense full-body workout. She explains all the moves and makes sure to watch your form, all the while bopping around and encouraging participants. Because she splits the class up into intervals using the TRX suspension system along with body weight exercises, time flies. Plus, you can tell she puts time into creating her playlists because they are perfect for pumping you up. A+.
Backing up: This Monday, we warmed up by kickboxing. Then, we moved on to core exercises with the TRX like pikes, planks, and mountain climbers (SO tough. I needed rest after about 10 seconds. Yikes.) alternated with kickboxing. TRX is great because it forces you to work on stability and balance, all the while increasing endurance and flexibility.
We also did a lot of bodyweight intervals (like burpees) alternated with biceps, triceps, and squat jumps using the TRX. Naturally, she threw in some sprints (
I HATE SPRINTING YAY RUNNING!) and some BOSU ball exercises. (Have you ever done burpees with BOSU balls? Killer.)
When I worked at Velocity Sports we used TRX a lot so I knew going into this it would be tough. (Who knew suspending your body in the air using straps could be such a crazy good workout?! I need to come up with an idea like this STAT.) Especially with Erin; she’s creative, she knows her stuff, and I was sure she wouldn’t go easy on us!
Mission “Monday Strength” accomplished. Who hates Mondays now? Not me.
