Every Damn Day

This weekend, I was out to lunch with a friend at an amazing little mediterranean restaurant. Not only did I discover that I love hummus (who knew!), but I learned that inspiration truly is everywhere. Our waiter spent a lot of time chatting with us about what he’s been doing to get healthier and how one person’s positive changes can inspire change in another person.

His current goal is simply “make small changes”, which I love. His first change? Breathing deeply. It reminds him to focus on his goals and just makes him feel better. He bought a little timer and programmed it to vibrate every 4 minutes. He keeps it in his pocket. Every time it vibrates he takes a deep breath. How simple is that?

It was just what I needed to hear at just the right time (doesn’t it always happen that way?)  because I’m feeling stuck. I want to make a big change, chase after a new dream, and improve my life, but I don’t know what that dream is right now. I don’t know what my first step should be.

It reminded me of this post about an “Every Damn Day” list. A few ideas I’ve adopted:

  • Spend 30 minutes outside
  • Spend 20 minutes on professional development
  • Sweat (get moving for at least 10 minutes!)

In other news (this is Kara Runs after all!) I’m supposed to run a 15K in Central Park on Saturday and am totally not ready. Surprise surprise. That’s what being lazy will do. (What’s happened to me?!) It’s actually a little disheartening; I don’t feel like myself lately. It seems that no matter what kind of sweating I do, if there’s not some running in my week, I get a little anxious. And angry. And easily annoyed. No bueno. I need to step it up.

Still, I woke up a few days ago with this strange tightness on the bottom of my foot. When I push on a specific spot it hurts a little…like a bruise (but there’s no bruise). Since I’m not training for something, I figure I’ll just wait it out. (I blame walking a half-mile in boots on Friday night.) But, that little race on Saturday? Who knows. I’ll show up. I’ll get the t-shirt. What will happen after that is beyond me. Maybe I’ll end up leaving the race early to secure the table for brunch while the rest of my friends crush it.

    You are not alone friend. I think many people go through feelings like this every now and then. Especially after such a huge part of your year spent training and racing. I know I don’t feel myself without a goal or trianing for a race on the calendar. You will definitely show up for that race with your friends and we will have fun no matter what. We run, we walk, whatever! This is supposed to be fun and fun we are going to have! THEN #allthebloodymarys. It’s now our tradition to run the last race of the year together. Two years and counting…. Don’t worry the new year is right around the corner and that always seem to bring a fresh start and fresh perspective for so many people. In the meantime…..you can count on ME! To cheer you up, drink with you, whatever it may be. I love spending time together :) I’m selfish like that. Can’t wait to see you this weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!
